The Ajanta Caves, located in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) district of Maharashtra, India, are a collection of 30 rock-cut Buddhist monuments dating from the 2nd century BCE to around 480 CE. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these caves are celebrated globally as masterpieces of Buddhist religious art.
Carved into a 75-meter (246 ft) high rock face, the caves comprise ancient monasteries (viharas) and worship halls (chaityas) belonging to different Buddhist traditions. They feature exquisite paintings and sculptures that vividly capture human emotions through gesture, posture, and form — making them some of the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian artistic expression.
The construction of the Ajanta Caves took place in two distinct phases: the first around the 2nd century BCE, and the second between 460 and 480 CE, according to modern research.
The murals within the caves depict scenes from the Jataka tales, illustrating the previous lives and rebirths of Lord Buddha, as well as various events from Buddhist legends. Historical records suggest that Ajanta once served as a monsoon retreat for monks and a resting place for travelers, merchants, and pilgrims.
Among the 30 caves, Caves 1, 2, 16, and 17 are particularly renowned for preserving the largest and most detailed collection of ancient Indian wall paintings, showcasing the artistic brilliance and spiritual depth of early Buddhist civilization.
